Hey there! Thanks for visiting!

This story begins as I neared the end of my 6 years of post-secondary education. Upon graduation, I knew I would eventually have to face the scary amount of debt I incurred to pay for school. I began planning for that day of reckoning: for that first notice in the mail stating just how much I owed per month, and how many years it would take to repay all that money back. Thanks to careful planning, watching my spending, and working hard, I managed to pay off my student loans within 9 months of graduating.  After I paid back my loans, I realized that I needed to better educate myself about money and how to manage it, and cure myself of my student spending habits. Now, I’m teaching myself about how to save and plan for the future.

I decided to start this blog as a way to keep track of my progress, share my goals, admit to my mistakes, and be a forum for others who might find themselves in a similar situation. I also wanted to highlight some of the challenges that come with living out in country. It seems lots of PF bloggers are city-folk, so I wanted to share a perspective with a hint of country to it (I have to drive everywhere, my clothing budget includes rubber boots and coveralls). Separating life and money is hard, and it is not my intent to have a strictly finance-related blog. I am aiming for a blog with a  good balance between life and money, a little serious and a little silly. I’m sharing what I learn through work and play, my occasional good idea, and screw-ups.  To those who want to leave comments with constructive criticism, a question, or another view point, please do so!

About this Country Girl

I’m a 27-year old living in the middle of nowhere. After 6 years of living in cities of varying sizes (and getting 2 degrees), I decided that I needed to get out of the city, so I moved back to the family farm. I found a job in my field not too far away and now I’m working for a living. In the summer of 2011, I bought my first home too. Here are some fun-facts about this country girl:

Official job title: Environmental Planner

Hobbies: Kayaking, Curling, Photography

Fav toys: Kindle (ironically, I cannot find the words to describe my love for my Kindle), PS3, IPad.

Fav video games: Uncharted 1-2-3, FFVII

Fav TV shows: Castle (Nathan Fillion), Firefly (Nathan Fillion  – see a pattern?), Supernatural, Mythbusters, Hawaii-Five-O, Republic of Doyle, Community.

Fav movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark

Dream Vacation Spot: Tahiti

Thrifty, frugal or cheap?: I think I could use all those words to describe me!

Have a good ‘un,

Country Girl

  1. Hi, nice website! I’m also from the country … my parents have a 100 acre farm. Good luck, look forward to reading your material!

    • Thanks so much for the kind words – it means a lot because I really admire your blog! About 100 acres is what we have too. Lots of room to run, play and get into all sorts of trouble.

  2. Awesome! I’m excited to read more 🙂
    Welcome to the blogging world.

  3. Well, hello! It’s nice to “meet” you. I live on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, too! It will be fun reading along with your blog.

  4. Ok, I live in an urban jungle. But I love the rural area and love your style of writing. So maybe that qualifies me to read this blog? 🙂

  5. Just thought I would drop in to say hello and that I’ve been reading your blog and enjoy it. Cheers Mr.CBB
